HUNTED: { Wedding Inspiration – 1920’s inspired wedding }

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

As vintage eras go, the 1920s are popular for a reason. Characterised by a post-war boom, Jazz, Art Deco, Glamour, the soon to be re-released novel regarding social aspirations The Great Gatsby, The Charleston, bob haircuts, and in the USA prohibition and the speakeasy the decade exudes a distinctive style.

If you are considering having a 1920s inspired wedding theme, you have plenty of opportunity to style yourself and your venue.

#Wedding Tip : One thing to consider, if you’re opting for a 1920s inspired wedding, is your instructions to your guests. They might adore the effort you’ve gone to, but be less willing to turn up 1920s style themselves.

Unusually, my inspiration for this hunt came from a single pair of shoes. I saw a pair of beautiful art deco peep toes from Rachel Simpson Shoes and decided to build a whole post around them. Why not?

Wedding Ideas 1920s gatsby

Broadening the hunt back out, if you want to find some inspiration from the silver screen 2012 is the year to do it. The critically acclaimed film The Artist (top image above) set in 1927 is a feast of visual ideas. Thanks to the commenter below for drawing my attention to it. Key to the period is the sharp, tuxdeo clad groom and a bridal look complete with wavy bob and hair accessories.

The other Hollywood movie that will be on everybody’s inspiration list this year is Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire once again demonstrate why men in tuxedo’s is always a good luck. But it’s Carey Mulligan who steal the show. Just look at this image above [ via IMDB ] to see how a statement headband, flicked bob, masses of pearls and fur are put together to create a breath-takingly gorgeous look. No shadow of a doubt, this look will be emulated at weddings and other parties the world over. Just do the right thing and go faux with the fur. No it’s not the authentic 1920s choice but the modern bride has fantastic options that lose the cruelty.

Away from the silver screen and back to authentic 1920s photos, once again in evidence is extraordinary headgear – in this case, based around the turban – strings of pearls and the short hair [ image : here ]

And so to styling your day. I’ve already found the bride some shoes. Best get a dress to accompany. This design above via Joanne Fleming Design is a perfect option. Dropped waist, in beaded silk georgette, it is the epitomy of 1920s glamour.

Head accessories are ubiquitous of 1920s styling, whether that’s a diamond forehead one inspired by The Great Gatsby or a turban-like one influenced by the original 20s photographs. If your style is more the former, you can get nice vintage inspired pieces via Etsy. The fact this “bride” above is carrying a doll is scaring the beejesus out of me, but if you can overlook that and concentrate on her head you’ll note the beautiful headdress.

Art Deco was a huge 1920s artistic movement. This beautiful beaded head piece design with three layers of bugle beads via Rachel Smith at Etsy nods perfectly to Art Deco stylings.

Last of the head-dresses is the 1920s style bridal cap veil. If you’re lucky enough to be in proximity to Dublin you can pop into Myrtle Ivory Bridal Couture to find one just like the above.

For the authentic 1920s look you are best placed to raid your nearest vintage store and ask for assistance. If you don’t mind going 1920s inspired, Etsy is a treasure trove. These pearl strings were easily tracked down, and are bang on 20s trend.

Grooms. When it comes to dressing 1920s it’s time to get your sharpest tuxedo on. The style of the era favoured single rather than double breasted jacks, and you’ll want a bowtie, but otherwise the world’s your oyster. [ image : My Tuxedo ]

Wedding Cake

  1. I am obsessed with the 1920s at the moment and my friend is having a 1920s themed wedding next summer so we are currently contracting a mood board. The Artist is a perfect starting point for the era.
