HUNTED: { Bridesmaid Dress – Maxi Dresses }

HUNTED: { Bridesmaid Dress – Maxi Dresses }

Spring is here (don’t get me started on an argument of the technicalities about the first day of Spring being the vernal equinox on March 20th. In my eyes it’s here already). What this means is that days are getting longer, the air is getting warmer, my friends are coming out of hibernation and my wardrobe is getting its bi-annual overhaul. Off go the Winter clothes that I haven’t worn once this year (or the previous . . . ) to charity, in comes my Spring / Summer attire which has been hidden away for too long.

One of my favourite items of clothing that starts making an appearance again around this time is the maxi dress. In case this is new terminology to you, it does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a dress. And it’s full (maxi) length. Elegant, versatile, *comfortable* – I love them.

If you’re planning your wedding and wondering how to dress your bridesmaids, I would encourage you to consider maxi dresses. There’s a high chance you’ll be able to find a style which is flattering for every shape of bridesmaid, and minimise the distress some girls might suffer at the propsect of having to flash a lot of leg. Remember the Kate / Pippa Middleton rule – if your bridesmaids look good, you come away looking like a confident,  comfortable bride.

To help you on your way, I’ve found you some maxi dress inspiration below. ok so this post is a thinly veiled excuse for me to go online shopping. Motives matter not, just enjoy the images.

Bridemaids Dresses Purple 2012

One look that flatters almost everyone is the grecian goddess maxi, as well as being appropriate for numerous wedding styles from classic to beach. I love this one in deep purple via Monique Lhuillier Bridesmaids at Browns Fashion . Whilst the colour may be advised for autumn / winter months due to its rich hue, there’s no reason you couldn’t make it work in other seasons. If you’ve got multiple bridesmaids you could consider variations of purple tone maxi, or different coloured grecians for each girl. Ah, the beauty and agony of choice.

Maxi dresses will work in literally every colour of the rainbow. I could post you imagery of bridal parties in every tone by way of demonstration, although a selection should suffice. Leaping away from rich purple and into a light neutral tone paired with pink / white blooms you start to see my point. It probably helps tonally that the girls are tanned and blonde here – it’s a generous bride that incorporates consideration of their girls colourings as well as their shape into dress choice [ image : here ].

Bridesmaids Dresses Full Length Formal Grey

If you’re looking for a maxi dress that’s more formal in nature then Ghost has a great range of predominantly satin dresses. I like this bias-cut silver satin dress for its vintage, ethereal elegance.

Maxi dresses absolutely don’t need to be one block colour, even for bridesmaids. These bright patterned dresses above with sweetheart necklines have even been paired with different flowers for each girl, and somehow the look still works. See how flattering the fit is on every single girl too – I’d be overjoyed as a bridesmaid to be given this style [ image : here ].

Bridesmaid Dresses Maxi Full Length Patterns Floral

Whilst I unfortunately can’t tell you where those specific printed maxis came from, Ted Baker tend to have a nice line in patterned dresses, like this floral one above. A little on the pricey side, but given that your girls are likely to re-wear the dress you may be able to come to some arrangement.

Bridesmaid Dresses non matching full length 2012 2013

And finally, I’ve discussed the immensely popular concept of mismatching bridesmaid dresses previously. This can most certainly be done with maxi dresses – taking lead from above you can have different style and different colours as long as they’re in the same tonal range (in this case sherbets). In this way, your bridesmaids are guaranteed to be wearing a dress they will love.

Maxi dresses, I think you are the bees knees.

But do you agree with me? And if not – why on earth not?!

  1. There are no absolute wrongs and rights for your first dance as it’s a personal moment, but the wedding hunter does have some suggestions on this blog…
